Orienting the house to the south is a wonderful thing for light and heat in the cold months but could lead to unwanted heat during the warm months. In this case, the roof overhang has been sized to shade completely the 2nd floor windows during the summer months. The sun shade accomplishes the same thing for the 1st floor windows.
