The walls are framed with conventional 2x4's that are tied to interior 2x2 walls to create a 10" cavity for cellulose insulation, which is generally regarded as the greenest insulation available due to its high recycled content. Another great feature of this framing strategy is that the insulation can be installed continuously, without interruption by the framing, which eliminates "thermal bridging", which is the escape of heat through the wood framing, which can represent as much as 25% of the exterior wall area and does not provide nearly the same insulating values as the insulation itself.
