Unit B, like the other three units, is framed with conventional 2x4 studs. However, a 2 pound, closed-cell, spray foam insulation was used in the walls that provides an "R" value of 21, while also eliminating air leakage through the wall. A similar strategy was used for the roofs which were insulated with spray foam between the rafters, thereby allowing for the mechanical system and ducting to be installed in the attics, which have been made part of the conditioned envelope of the homes. Typically, the mechanical systems serving a BPC home would be installed in a well insulated basement that was also part of the conditioned space. However, in this case, the homes are built over insulated concrete slabs.
