This recently completed new home was built with sustainability as a primary goal. Registered with both LEED for Homes (US Green Building Council) and National Green Building Standard (NAHB Research Center) certification programs, we anticipate that the home will be certified at the top platinum tier within LEED and has already been certified at the top Emerald tier by the NAHBRC. (See a complete summary of this home’s green features with accompanying pictures.)
The home incorporates high levels of insulation, an effective perimeter air barrier, and renewable energy sources to provide a majority of the energy required to operate the home. Energy sources include passive solar gain to a concrete thermal slab, solar photovoltaic panels for electricity, solar thermal panels for hot water, and a wood-fired furnace. Environmentally sensitive materials include FSC certified wood for framing, siding, flooring, doors, and cabinetry; kitchen counters made from recycled glass, and roofing made from recycled and recyclable plastics. Water-saving measures include a composting toilet, grey water recycling, and rain water harvesting. The owners are planning for public open houses to view the home.
