This recently completed new home was built with sustainability as the primary goal. Registered with both LEED for Homes (US Green Building Council) and National Green Building Standard (NAHB Research Center) certification programs, the home has been certified at the top Platinum tier within LEED and at the top Emerald tier by the NAHBRC. In addition, three major awards have been bestowed upon the home to date. (Read our News report on these awards.)
The home incorporates high levels of insulation, an effective perimeter air barrier, and renewable energy sources to provide virtually all of the energy required to operate the home. Energy sources include passive solar, solar photovoltaic panels for electricity, solar thermal panels for hot water, and a pellet-fired furnace. Environmentally sensitive materials include FSC certified wood for framing, siding, flooring, doors, and cabinetry; kitchen counters made from recycled glass, and roofing made from recycled and recyclable plastics. Water-saving measures include a composting toilet, grey water recycling, and rain water harvesting. The home has been the subject of several public open houses to date.
