The floor framing features engineered trusses in place of conventional 2x material, or engineered I-joists. Although more expensive, floor trusses are both resource efficient and allow for air ducts (and plumbing, electrical lines) to be run through the floors. This eliminates soffits in the basement and allows us to install the 2nd floor air handler and ducts in the floor below, which means that they do not have to be installed in the attic, a common practice that usually results in wasted energy. (There are strategies to make the attic part of the conditioned envelope by insulating and air sealing at the rafter plane which can also solve the problem.)
