Energy efficient home under construction
< Previous project   1  2  3   Next project >

This new home features an exceptional thermal envelope with high levels of insulation, thermal breaks to isolate the framing and foundation, and air-tight construction. Double walls eliminate thermal bridging and create 9-1/2" cavities that will be filled with 0.6lb spray foam insulation. The roof features a similar double framing strategy to eliminate thermal bridging and to create 16" cavities for SPF insulation. The entire envelope has been sheathed with a panel product that creates a weather barrier with taped seams to aid in the creation of an air-tight home. Air-tight is still a concept that many people do not understand. An air-tight home can still "breathe", meaning it allows moisture in the vapor state to dry to the interior and/or exterior. What we do not want is air leakage, which can be a major source of moisture problems. For its size, the home will require very little energy to heat and cool, which will be accomplished by air source heat pumps that will extract heat from the air to heat the house, even on the coldest days of the year. Clean energy will be provided by both a solar hot water system and solar photovoltaic system to generate electricity.
