January, 2012
Chris Trolle of BPC Green Builders has completed nine days of training and passed the exam to become a Certified Passive House Consultant. This program, which is sponsored by Passive House Institute US, has established an aggressive standard for energy efficient, high performance homes that can result in a 90% reduction in energy requirements. Similarly high standards are achieved for comfort, indoor air quality, and durability.

The 2011 HOBI award for The Best Energy-Efficient Green Remodel was awarded to BPC Green Builders for its renovation of a 1970's colonial in Ridgefield. The HOBI awards are sponsored by The Homebuilders Association of Connecticut. Follow this link for a tour of the home.

The CT Green Business Awards go out each year to companies that are leading the way to a new green economy for CT. For 2011, BPC Green Builders has been honored as the CT Green Builder of the Year. These awards are sponsored by Business New Haven. Stay tuned for more details.
December, 2010
The Kantor house, a new home recently completed by BPC Green Builders in New Canaan, CT, has been certified at the top Platinum tier within LEED for Homes, sponsored by the US Green Building Council, which is generally regarded as the most stringent green building certification program in the country. The house has also been certified at the top Emerald tier by the National Green Building Standard, sponsored by the NAHB Research Center.

In addition, the house has earned three prestigious awards:
• Green Builder magazine selected the Kantor house as the outstanding home in the US for its “Best Use of Advanced Building Technology” for the 2010 Green Builder Green Home of the Year Awards program. An article on the house was published in their December “Awards” issue.
• The Connecticut Green Building Council chose the Kantor house as The Most Intriguing Residence in Connecticut for 2010.
• Energy Engineers, Connecticut Chapter, chose the Kantor house and BPC Green Builders for its 2009 Energy Project Award.
• The CT Energy Efficiency Fund, CL&P, and UI have announced that the Kantor home placed third in the first annual CT Zero Energy Challenge. This competition was established to help educate homebuilders and homeowners about high efficiency homes that use almost no energy. Through this Challenge, the award-winning homes have demonstrated that building to this level of energy efficiency is achievable today.

At the invitation of The CT Energy Efficiency Fund, Chris Trolle of BPC Green Builders participated in a panel discussion at the 2010 Enviro Build Expo on 10/13 at the CT Expo Center in Hartford, CT. The discussion concerned how to build an energy efficient home. The target audience was contractors and builders.

At the request of the Connecticut Chapter of The Sierra Club, Mike Trolle of BPC Green Builders provided testimony to the Codes Amendment Subcommittee of the Codes and Standards Committee of the Connecticut Department of Safety in support of proposed code amendments to increase the energy and water efficiency requirements contained within the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code, which is due to be adopted by the State within the next year.

Mike Trolle of BPC Green Builders, at the invitation of Amey Marrella, Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection, participated in an Earth Day panel presentation and discussion at the State Capitol regarding green building, organic farming, and green companies in Connecticut.

BPC Green Builders, LLC has relocated its offices to 523 Danbury Road in Wilton, Connecticut. The move was the company’s second in three years and was necessitated by their continued growth which reflects the increasing popularity of green building in Connecticut. The company has specialized in high performance green building since its inception in 1998.

Mike Trolle of BPC Green Builders was invited by the Greater Danbury chapter of the Women’s Council of Realtors to speak to its members about green building. Mike’s presentation explored the energy-related performance benefits of green homes as the most important of the multiple performance benefits that can be achieved when the design and construction of a home is based upon residential building science.

Mike Trolle of BPC Green Builders was invited by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to speak to its staff about residential green building and the important role it must play in protecting Connecticut’s environment.

In late 2008, Mike and Chris Trolle of BPC Green Builders were invited by the Committee on the Environment of the Connecticut chapter of the American Institute of Architects, to speak to its members regarding a builder’s perspective on green building. The continuing education presentation took place June 30, 2009. One of BPC’s current projects, the Kantor residence in New Canaan, Connecticut (which is seeking certification at the top platinum level in the LEED for Homes program), was used to illustrate the team approach that characterizes the best green homes. Mike and Chris were joined by four members of the team involved in this project, as well as the owners, Nate and Etta Kantor. Team members included the LEED for Homes provider, Karla Donnelly, of Steven Winter Associates; the landscape architect, Keith Beaver of Didona Associates; the solar systems engineer and contractor, Leigh Seddon of Alteris Renewables; and the fireplace consultant, Mike Van Buren of Blazing Design. The LEED for Homes program is offered by the United States Green Building Council.

BPC Green Builders is pleased to announce that it is currently at work on two projects that are registered with the LEED for Homes program, offered by the USGBC
(United States Green Building Council). Among the programs to offer green certification for new homes, LEED for Homes is generally regarded as the program with the most stringent standards. The entry point for successful certification is “Certified” and rises from there to Silver, then Gold, and finally Platinum. Both homes under construction by BPC have targeted the top tier for eventual certification.

The Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Fairfield County (HBRA) presented an informational meeting to introduce its members to the new Build Green Connecticut program affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the parent organization of the HBRA, as well as the LEED for Homes program created by the U.S. Green Building Council to promote the design and construction of high-performance green homes. The panel of experts included Michael Trolle of BPC Green Builders, LEED for Homes Advocate for Connecticut and a member of both the Connecticut Green Building Council and the HBRA.

BPC Green Builders was the builder for a new home in Norfolk that won an award from The Connecticut Green Building Council for its “Intriguing Design.” This marks the first year of an annual awards competition to be sponsored by the CTGBC.

The USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) announced that a new home built by BPC Green Builders in Bethany, CT, was awarded LEED for Homes certification at the silver level, becoming one of the first homes in the state to be certified. The home was registered during the pilot phase of the program, which was officially launched in November of 2007. The home was built to be exceptionally energy efficient and features solar thermal panels to create hot water and solar photovoltaic panels to generate electricity.

Building Performance Construction Services, LLC has changed its name to BPC Green Builders, LLC to better reflect its commitment to residential green building. The company has a ten year record of building high performance green homes and has received numerous awards for its work.

Michael Trolle, a partner at Building Performance Construction which specializes in high performance green building for homes, has accepted the position of volunteer advocate to promote the introduction of the new LEED for Homes green building program in Connecticut. The program has been developed by the United States Green Building Council. Mike is a member of the Connecticut Green Building Council which recently announced that it has agreed to become an official chapter of the United States Green Building Council.

The Home Builders Association of Connecticut announced that BPC Green Builders was selected to receive a 2006 HOBI Award for the construction of the Best Energy Efficient/Green Home in Connecticut. The home is a new saltbox in Norfolk, Connecticut, built with structural insulated panels and featuring solar photovoltaic panels to generate electricity for use in the home and re-sale to the utility.

The Home Builders Association of Connecticut announced that BPC Green Builders was selected to receive a 2004 HOBI Award for the construction of the Best Energy Efficient/Green Home in Connecticut. The home is a new four-square Victorian reproduction home in Redding, Connecticut, built with structural insulated panel technology and featuring a variety of green building products including fiber cement shingle siding, FSC certified maple flooring, and a sprinkler system for fire protection.
