Working with a custom home builder gives you the opportunity to enjoy a not just a new home, but a new home built and designed just for you! So now is the time to ask yourself whether “what’s popular” is always what you want in your new home.

Let’s look at counters, for example. For years, granite kitchen counters was a luxury. Now, granite counters and stainless steel appliances – have become almost standard for new homes. That’s fine if you if you’re looking at a home that’s already built, but many homeowners who are building new custom homes, are starting to look at other choices that might be a better fit for their tastes and lifestyle. Here are a few examples:

Ceramic Tile:
Ceramic tile comes in a wide range of colors, textures and designs that can look very modern or be the perfect choice for a vintage look.

Butcher Block:
While Butcher Block can be damaged by water, cuts and burns, it can easily be renewed through sanding and re-sealing.

Solid Surface:
We find that custom-made solid surface countertops such as Corian are making a comeback. They come in a wide range of colors and patterns and can be perfect for a more contemporary look. They are stain resistant and scratches can be sanded out, but hot pots and pans can cause damage.

Other Stone Surfaces: Engineered stone is nonporous and resists scratching, so it never needs sealing. Brands like Zodiaq, Silestone and Caesarstone give you the look of stone without the upkeep of granite. High-maintenance marble is costly and high maintenance, but may be perfect an island or inset used for baking. Soapstone countertops are heat, impact, and stain resistant if provided with regular sealing and polishing.

Concrete: Eco-friendly concrete is heat and scratch resistant, but unless regularly sealed it will stain easily. Cracking is common over time.

Glass:
Glass might just be today’s ultimate custom-home “wow factor.” The glass is engineered to stand up to use and countertops can even be lit from beneath so they glow.

Counters are just one example! We’re delighted to help you explore ideas for selecting everything from finishes and flooring to floor plans so your new home is a true custom home.
